VMware Platform Enables BayScribe to Reinvent Dictation Services for Healthcare with Cloud-based Solution

Virtualized, Cloud-based Dictation Solution Helps Hospitals Cut Capital Expenses by Hundreds of Thousands while Accelerating Billing Cycles to Improve Cash Flow

PALO ALTO, Calif. – April 7, 2009 – VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced that BayScribe has implemented a cloud-based dictation solution for hospitals and other healthcare providers on the industry-leading virtualization and management suite, VMware Infrastructure 3, allowing BayScribe customers to implement a resilient and scalable enterprise-class dictation system without any capital expenditure.

BayScribe is a leading provider of dictation services, supporting over 50,000 physicians nationwide and facilitating more than 500,000 transcribed reports each month.  Dictation services are an essential component of the healthcare system, helping to ensure that medical records are kept current and patient billing is accurate and timely.  However, dictation systems are notoriously unreliable, and downtime is a constant problem.  This causes delays in key processes, leading to compliance issues for healthcare providers, and forcing hospitals to pay overtime as they scramble to deal with the backlog.  BayScribe has created an innovative virtualized solution on the VMware platform that solves these big problems and helps hundreds of hospitals save millions each year.

“Reliability is the most important variable in the dictation process,” said Dana Ramey, supervisor of health information services for St. Louis-based Sisters of Mercy Health System.  “The cloud-based solution BayScribe has built on the VMware platform works 24/7/52.  By contrast, our previous hardware-based system had issues almost every day.  With greater reliability, we can accelerate cycles for accounts receivables and eliminate many hours of overtime.  And because there was no hardware to deploy, we were able to get up and running in 48 hours with no capital outlay.  The combination of BayScribe and VMware has been a big win for Sisters of Mercy.”

BayScribe selected VMware as its virtualization platform based on numerous factors, starting with customer demand.  Many BayScribe customers have standardized on VMware and require that all new software systems run on the VMware platform.  In addition, VMware’s leadership in cloud computing technology and its robust toolset, most notably VMware VMotion™ for high availability, were important factors.  BayScribe also leverages VMware’s flexibility to offer innovation that traditional dictation systems can’t match, such as true disaster recovery.

“By virtualizing our solution and delivering it via the cloud, we’re able to offer it at a price that gives hospitals full ROI within a few weeks,” said Steve Bonney, vice president of business development at BayScribe.  “Traditionally, large hospital systems would spend upwards of a million dollars on racks of hardware, VPNs and consulting services just to get started.  That wouldn’t even include the ongoing maintenance, redundancy for DR and operating expenses.  Our unique software-based approach to dictation combined with the efficiency and control that VMware’s cloud computing platform offers has changed everything and given us a major point of differentiation for customers who are used to pouring time and money into unreliable dictation systems. In addition, smaller hospitals can now enjoy new levels of performance that were previously out of reach because of expense.”

The BayScribe solution is delivered by Net Access Corporation on the VMware platform.  Net Access Corporation is a leading provider of managed network and application services, and a founding member of the VMware Server Provider Program, which is part of the VMware vCloud Initiative.   Running the BayScribe solution in an external cloud provided by Net Access Corporation makes it truly turnkey, allowing BayScribe to onboard new customers in 1-2 days.  Net Access Corporation aggregates computing, storage and network resources into a cloud architecture that has very high scalability, and essentially offers IT as a service.  The cloud enables aggressive service-level agreements for BayScribe customers, and Net Access Corporation operates a Type II SAS 70-audited datacenter that reflects its commitment to proper controls and safeguards.

Donna Heusner is the owner of Full Circle Transcription, a business partner of BayScribe.  Her firm will only work with customers who use BayScribe for dictation.  “We wouldn’t even consider partnering with another dictation service provider,” she said.  “BayScribe’s virtualized solution offers 99.999% uptime.  It always works and it’s simple for doctors as well as our transcribers to use.  And the fact that there is essentially no upfront cost makes it a no brainer.  While I’m certainly not an expert in virtualization or cloud computing, I’ve been in the transcription business for over 20 years, and the value that VMware and BayScribe have brought to our industry is remarkable.”
