Bit9 + Carbon Black Joins Microsoft Virus Initiative and Virus Information Alliance

Memberships demonstrate Bit9 + Carbon Black’s commitment to providing customers with the best, most open security for Windows endpoints

WALTHAM, Mass.—April 29, 2015Bit9® + Carbon Black®, the leader in endpoint threat prevention, detection and response, today announced it has joined the Microsoft Virus Initiative (MVI) and the Virus Information Alliance (VIA). Membership in these programs further demonstrates Bit9 + Carbon Black’s commitment to providing enterprises with the most comprehensive and open security for Windows-based endpoints.

MVI is a program for companies that provide anti-malware solutions. It enables those vendors to share information about the threat landscape, with the goal of providing even greater protection for their enterprise customers. Membership in MVI provides Bit9 + Carbon Black with:

  • Early access to new Windows APIs—enabling the company to provide its customers with support for new versions of Windows quickly and easily
  • Access to malware telemetry and samples—enabling even better threat detection
  • The ability to enhance the Windows security ecosystem through participation in Microsoft security conferences

VIA is an anti-malware collaboration program for security software providers, security service providers, anti-malware testing organizations, and other entities involved in fighting cybercrime. As a member of VIA, Bit9 + Carbon Black will further enhance its ability to protect its customers’ information against malware by:

  • Exchanging technical information on malicious software with Microsoft, with the goal of improving protection for its customers who run Windows-based endpoint devices. For example, the program provides malware telemetry and samples to security product teams to identify gaps in their protection and prioritize new threat coverage.
  • Utilizing information on malware as well as metadata on malicious activity—enabling better detection across the community of participants benefiting all customers

“The industry is constantly looking for ways to stay ahead of advanced attacks,” said Dennis Batchelder, partner director for the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. “Bit9 + Carbon Black’s clear commitment to delivering leading endpoint security solutions to its enterprise customers to protect them from these increasingly relentless attacks makes them an excellent addition to the MVI and VIA programs.”

In February, Bit9 + Carbon Black announced it would be the first advanced threat protection platform to integrate with Microsoft anti-malware—System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection (SCEP)—and exploit prevention—Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET)—tools to strengthen security while decreasing the total cost of advanced threat and malware protection across endpoints in both large and small enterprises (see news release).

“The MVI and VIA programs are a perfect fit for Bit9 + Carbon Black, because we are solely focused on providing our growing base of customers with the best endpoint security solutions,” said Brian Hazzard, Bit9 + Carbon Black’s vice president of technical alliances. “Integrating our endpoint threat prevention, detection and response solutions with Microsoft SCEP and EMET further solidifies our commitment to helping enterprises small and large, detect and respond to advanced attacks quickly and effectively. We are privileged to join these programs and will be a significant contributor to helping secure the world’s data against advanced threats and targeted attacks.”
