CRN Magazine Names VMware Executive One of the Top Innovators of 2003

Leading Channel Publication Honors VMware's Engineering Efforts for Introducing VMware Control Center, One of This Year's Hottest Technologies

PALO ALTO, Calif., September 25, 2003- VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual machine software for industry-standard systems, today announced that Computer Reseller News (CRN) has named Dr. Kieran Harty, EVP of engineering at VMware, one of the top innovators of the year. Dr. Harty joined VMware in 1999 to lead the VMware engineering organization after the introduction of the company's first product, VMware Workstation. Since then, Dr. Harty has overseen the development of three breakthrough products, the most recent one being VMware Control Center, that have been embraced by both partners and customers.

"VMware Control Center delivers on the promise of utility computing today and it is an honor for Control Center to be recognized as one of the hottest technologies of 2003," said Dr. Kieran Harty, EVP of engineering at VMware. "This award also belongs to the founding technical team who, five years ago, pioneered the core breakthroughs that made possible everything we're building today. As we look ahead, we will build new and exciting virtualization innovations that grow our set of products at the fast pace set over the last five years."

In 2001, VMware became the first company to deliver two enterprise-class virtual machine products -- VMware ESX Server and VMware GSX Server -- for industry-standard servers. These products partition multi-processor servers into smaller one or two CPU servers, allowing multiple operating systems to run simultaneously and independently on the same server. ESX Server and GSX Server are used by thousands of enterprises today to consolidate underutilized servers and to drive utilization rates from less than 5% to over 80%.

This year, VMware introduced VMware Control Center, a groundbreaking new product that truly advances utility computing. With Control Center, enterprises can manage their distributed, heterogeneous computing environments as a single pool of hardware resources and respond to changing business demands in real-time while maximizing server resource utilization. Using VMotion technology in Control Center, enterprises can move live, running virtual machines from one physical server to another with continuous service availability.

VMware products are available from a network of global resellers and distributors. They are also available from industry-leading OEM hardware partners, including Dell, HP and IBM, as well as direct, through the company's worldwide field organization.
