Egenera Announces Agreement With VMware

Marlboro, Mass. -- November 24, 2003-- Egenera Inc., the leader in next-generation datacenter infrastructure, today announced an alliance with VMware, the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems. Under the terms of the agreement, Egenera will offer customers VMware GSX Server bundled with the Egenera BladeFrame system and will fully support the solution.

The VMware GSX Server platform runs on top of a Linux or Microsoft host operating system, allowing users to partition each Egenera Processing Blade into multiple virtual machines. Each virtual machine is completely isolated with its own operating system and applications. Diverse operating systems can run side-by-side securely on a single physical blade, ensuring maximum utilization of the Egenera BladeFrame system. System resources are allocated to any virtual machine based on need, delivering maximum capacity utilization and control over computing infrastructure.

"By offering VMware virtual machine technology with the BladeFrame system, we're extending our platform's virtualization capabilities to the processor level," said Susan Davis, vice president of product marketing and management, Egenera. "The combined offering further increases datacenter efficiency by allowing customers to deploy multiple operating systems on a single Processing Blade and bringing them even closer to achieving a true utility computing model."

"With its innovations in PAN architecture, Egenera has moved the systems market into its next generation," said Peter Sonsini, senior director of alliances, VMware. "Combining VMware's virtual computing technology with the BladeFrame system enables enterprise customers to improve resource utilization, consolidate servers and streamline administration to lower total cost of ownership."

VMware technology enables safe and reliable server consolidation in secure virtual machines that offer all the networking and clustering capabilities of physical servers. Management and provisioning of GSX Server virtual machines is greatly simplified by their encapsulation in container files that can be easily copied and moved between Processing Blades or stored for immediate standby use.
