John Muir Health Adopts VMware’s SpringSource tc Server to Streamline Application Deployment
SpringSource tc Server Improves Server Deployment Automation and Management Across Broad Range of Applications
PALO ALTO, Calif. – August 11, 2010 –VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud, today announced that John Muir Health, a not-for-profit health care organization with two of the largest medical centers in Contra Costa County, Calif.—the Walnut Creek and Concord campuses of John Muir Medical Center— has deployed SpringSource tc Server to enhance functionality and productivity throughout the organization. VMware’s SpringSource tc Server is the enterprise version of Apache Tomcat, a widely adopted application server that is ideally suited for usage in modern virtual and cloud environments.
The Development & Integration Group in John Muir Health’s ITS department is responsible for maintaining a broad range of applications that link all the department systems to the core health system. Prior to upgrading from Apache Tomcat to tc Server, all deployments within The Development Group were done manually, which used up valuable time and resources. John Muir Health needed to improve response times so they could fix problems before users noticed them. With the addition of tc Server plus JVM monitoring tools, enabled by SpringSource Hyperic, The Development Group is able to quickly resolve issues and keep applications running smoothly.
For healthcare organizations dealing with private patient information, data integrity and server security are essential. tc Server’s secure platform allows the organization to maintain its stringent security guidelines by using the management console feature to set up security features without logging back onto the server – this alleviates concerns about location of each account.
“With tc Server, we have a more reliable and maintainable deployment strategy and it takes a lot less time. Using a few clicks, it takes less than 15 minutes to get an application up and running,” said Ryan Mahon, system integration analyst/programmer at John Muir Health. “tc Server cuts problem resolution time in half because it gives us all the information we need to troubleshoot issues quickly.”
SpringSource tc Server Delivers the Following Business Results to John Muir Health:
- Improved Server Deployment and Management—tc Server’s operational management capabilities allow the Development Group to deploy and monitor all the servers from one console.
- Rapid Response Time—tc Server provides early alerting on potential problems to expedite the Development Group’s response time.
- High Availability—John Muir Health uses tc Server to maintain production cluster to ensure high availability for the company’s internally developed application.
- Fast Problem Resolution—Once alerted to a problem, the Development Group uses the detailed metrics delivered by tc Server to quickly diagnose and resolve the server issues.
- Integration with VMware—The compatibility between tc Server and VMware’s Virtual Machines enables the Development Group to expand its use of virtual infrastructure.
“tc Server’s versatility allows companies to utilize an array of functions across their application server. The combination of a lightweight server with operational management, advanced diagnostics and mission-critical support provides unparalled performance,” said Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management for the SpringSource division of VMware. “Coupled with the power of VMware’s Virtual Machines, SpringSource tc Server is the ideal environment for deploying applications.”
