VMware ThinApp Enables Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland to Virtualize Applications on the Desktop
Distributed Organization Virtualizes Every Major Desktop Application in 30 Days, Cuts Application Deployment Time by More than 90 Percent
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- May 5, 2009 -- VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced that the Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland (Legal Aid) has virtualized nearly all of its desktop applications with VMware ThinApp™, an innovative solution that allows users to run any version of almost any application on a single operating system. This enables Legal Aid to cut costs and increase control over its application environment by managing the applications centrally while still allowing end users to run the applications locally for optimal performance.
Legal Aid is a private, non-profit organization that has been providing legal assistance to children, seniors, and low-income households since 1911. Legal Aid provides services out of 13 offices across Maryland. Before implementing VMware ThinApp, Legal Aid’s IT staff had to manually install and manage applications on 300 desktops. In addition to spending countless hours on application installs, this manual approach required the IT staff to spend hundreds of hours each year driving between the 13 offices. With VMware ThinApp, an application can be deployed to every user in every office in less than one hour, and the IT staff can maintain version control and ensure there are no installation errors.
“I don’t typically tout specific products but VMware ThinApp is phenomenal,” said Chuck Mills, director of IT for Legal Aid. “In less than 30 days – our free trial period with ThinApp – we had virtualized every major application running on desktops throughout our organization. In addition to dramatically reducing administrative costs and allowing us to be more responsive to our legal team, ThinApp is helping us save money on hardware. By eliminating concerns about OS conflicts and registry errors that are common during application installs on older desktops, we can extend the life of our PCs and refresh our computers less frequently.”
Legal Aid has virtualized applications such as Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint, and optical character recognition (OCR) software. ThinApp also allows Legal Aid to evaluate new software products easily and conveniently by distributing evaluation software to users without having to go through a cumbersome and potentially troublesome installation process that could impact staff productivity.
“As a small organization with limited resources, VMware ThinApp has quickly become invaluable to us,” said Mills. “We can do more with less. That’s the bottom line. ThinApp has made us much more flexible as an organization. We can stretch our IT dollars further. We can give our employees what they need on their desktops, when they need it, which means our attorneys are never stuck without the application they need for a specific task. In the end, this all translates into better service for the thousands of Marylanders who count on us to protect their legal rights.”
