Redmond Magazine Readers Name VMware Desktop and Server Virtualization Products 'Best-in-Class'

Redmond Magazine Bestows Top Honors on VMware for Third Consecutive Year

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 22, 2006—VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced that VMware Workstation received the Redmond Magazine Readers' Choice award in the Desktop Virtualization category. In addition, VMware GSX Server received the Redmond Magazine Readers' Choice award in the Server Virtualization category. Past recognition by Redmond Magazine includes the Editors' Choice award, Most Valuable Product award and "Products We Love" award.

"We're honored that our virtual infrastructure products have been recognized as best-in-class by the readers of Redmond Magazine," said Dan Chu, senior director of developer products at VMware. "These awards underscore the industry leadership of our virtual infrastructure products and validate the choice made by tens of thousands of enterprises and several million end users who have already adopted VMware virtual infrastructure as a core IT strategy. As we look ahead, we remain committed to continuing to bring useful and innovative technology to market."

VMware Workstation, first introduced more than seven years ago and used by millions today, makes it possible for users to create a library of virtual machines for 32-bit and 64-bit x86 operating systems, including Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris x86, that replicate production environments. These virtual machines can then be rapidly provisioned and used, making it possible for developers, testers, and IT users to spend more time developing and testing software and less time configuring and managing their required environments.

VMware GSX Server, first introduced five years ago and used by tens of thousands of enterprises, enables users to quickly provision new server capacity by partitioning a physical Windows or Linux server into multiple virtual machines. The recently-introduced free feature-packed entry-level VMware Server is the successor to VMware GSX Server.

VMware Server is the first commercially available server virtualization product with support for 64-bit virtual machines and support for Intel Virtualization Technology. In addition, VMware Server supports Virtual SMP, a technology that enables a single virtual machine to span multiple physical processors. VMware Server is available for immediate beta download at: www.vmware.com/download/server/.

By making virtualization technology available broadly and freely, VMware is providing the opportunity for users to experience the benefits of virtualization firsthand. VMware Server is an ideal starting point for users seeking to familiarize themselves with the benefits of virtualization before progressing onto the broader enterprise-class suite of VMware virtual infrastructure products that includes ESX Server with Virtual SMP and VirtualCenter with VMotion technology for large-scale production server consolidation, business continuity and enterprise hosted desktop solutions.
