VMware Extends Virtual Desktop Technology Leadership through Licensing and Co-Development Agreement with RTO Software

VMware View™ to Deliver Superior Personality Management to Virtual Desktop Users through Agreement with RTO Software

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – September 2, 2009 – Today at VMworld 2009, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud, announced it has signed an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement with RTO Software to integrate its industry-leading Virtual Profiles technology with VMware View™, the industry-leading enterprise desktop virtualization solution.  The integrated offering will provide comprehensive user personality management and will enable VMware View customers to dynamically provision users, together with their profile, applications and data, across networks and devices. (See related press release also announced today: “VMware Leads in Virtual Desktops with VMware View™ – Simplifying Desktop Management, Lowering Costs and Enriching User Experience.”)

“Burton Group considers profile virtualization an important and necessary part of all virtualized desktop deployments,” said Chris Wolf, senior analyst, Burton Group. “Efficient, dynamic virtual desktop environments—backed by platforms that intelligently combine desktop, application, and profile virtualization—provide a foundation for improved user productivity, increased self-service, and lower IT operational expenses. Vendors that deliver such solutions are well-positioned for significant growth in 2010.”

This agreement will provide customers who deploy virtual desktops using VMware View with a significantly more productive and consistent user experience. Personality management allows IT teams to centrally manage user data, settings, and application access in a secure environment while delivering a personalized desktop experience to end users.  VMware View, coupled with RTO Software Virtual Profiles, will allow IT organizations to simplify and automate the capture and management of end user personality while providing the richest end user experience.

“Our customers want to leverage the most widely deployed enterprise desktop virtualization solution, VMware View™, to provide end users with flexible desktop access across networks and devices,” said Jocelyn Goldfein, vice president and general manager, Desktop Business Unit, VMware.  “User personality management is a key element enabling customers to move from device-centric computing to user-centric computing. We enable IT to provide users with customized access to their applications and data independent of device and location, while streamlining routine desktop management activities. We are thrilled to work with RTO Software to further the movement to user-centric computing and provide VMware View customers with the best user computing experience.”

RTO Software's Virtual Profiles management technology allows users to log on quickly, sync user data and settings between different environments and sessions, and customize their VMware View desktops.  Whether a user is running VMware View or their physical desktop, they will have access to a common user environment with the joint solution. This means user data, desktop settings, and application settings will follow the user, rather than the device, leading to a more seamless user experience across boundaries.

Enterprises can transform desktop management while providing end users with the best user experience with VMware View, the only purpose-built virtual desktop solution.  VMware View helps enterprises simplify and automate desktop and application management using a unified management framework.  As a result, customers can reduce desktop total cost of ownership (TCO), improve data security and enhance flexibility and productivity.

“RTO Software's solution has excelled in the industry because of its scalability, ease of use, and data integrity,” said Kevin Goodman, chief executive officer, RTO Software.  “We are excited to collaborate with virtualization leader VMware to help broaden the adoption of desktop virtualization by providing our Virtual Profiles management solutions that streamline IT administration and provide end users with a truly flexible and personalized experience.”
