Umpqua Bank Deploys VMware NSX Network Virtualization for Network Micro-Segmentation

Leading Bank Chooses VMware NSX to Improve Security, Reliability and Agility; Goes From Initial Product Discussions to Production Deployment in 45 Days

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 18, 2014) - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced that Umpqua Bank has deployed the VMware NSX™ network virtualization platform for micro-segmentation of its network. Umpqua Bank chose the VMware NSX platform for its unique micro-segmentation capabilities -- namely distributed firewalling and routing policy management -- which enables baked-in security across its infrastructure. Umpqua Bank's IT team successfully deployed VMware NSX into production on the company's existing physical infrastructure only 45 days after initially learning about VMware NSX.

Umpqua Bank is a U.S.-based community bank recognized for its strong focus on customer needs, entrepreneurial approach, innovative use of technology, and distinctive banking solutions. It takes a community-centric approach to combining interactive design features and technology in smaller store footprints near where customers live, work and play. Umpqua identified a critical long term security need within its infrastructure, which had the potential to positively impact a major part of its business.

With the VMware NSX platform, the bank's IT team deployed security controls inside the data center network for a fraction of the cost that would have been required using a hardware-centric approach. The combination of performance and automation delivered by VMware NSX has allowed Umpqua to cost-effectively operationalize micro-segmentation. Implementation has been rapid, and the team has gone from VMware NSX initial discussions to full production in less than two months. Adoption of network virtualization has made remote provisioning, management, orchestration and control of the bank's infrastructure possible.

"Just being compliant isn't enough -- having the highest possible level of security protection in place is vital for us and our customers," said Sam Guidice, Manager Infrastructure Systems at Umpqua Bank. "Micro-segmentation with VMware NSX lets us adopt a powerful Zero Trust approach with our infrastructure, quickly and cost effectively. Micro-segmentation-based security wouldn't have been financially or operationally feasible without VMware NSX."

VMware NSX - The Platform for Network Virtualization
VMware NSX is software that virtualizes the network and delivers the entire networking and security model from L2-L7 in software. The platform decouples the network from the underlying hardware, yet takes advantage of the existing network infrastructure without changes to enable new levels of service delivery speed, agility and cost reductions. VMware NSX delivers a completely new operational model for networking that breaks through current network barriers and enables data center operators to achieve orders of magnitude better agility and improved economics.

"With weekly announcements of major breaches, the risk of exposing intellectual property or sensitive customer data is now a Board-level discussion for our customers," said Chris King, vice president of product marketing, networking and security business unit at VMware. "Umpqua's experience is a great example of how the smartest organizations are turning to software-defined innovation to address the increased pace of business while managing risk. VMware NSX helps Umpqua be fast, agile and secure."
