SpringOne 2GX 2011 Conference Leads Enterprise Developers to the Cloud

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 25, 2011 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the start of SpringOne 2GX 2011, taking place this week in Chicago. Focused on the open source development frameworks Spring and Grails, SpringOne 2GX 2011 is the ideal place for developers to obtain critical skills and knowledge to build, run, scale and manage software solutions that meet the challenging needs of enterprise applications in the cloud era. SpringOne 2GX is taking place at the Marriott Miracle Mile Hotel in Chicago, Illinois from October 25-28, 2011.

Spring is the world's most widely used development framework for enterprise Java applications.  Interest in Grails, a rapid web application development framework which uses the Groovy programming language, has increased in recent years.  Developers from around the world are scheduled to attend SpringOne 2GX 2011 to participate in peer discussions and deep dive sessions on the evolution of enterprise application development to new cloud platforms. Special session tracks will focus on cloud architectures and the challenges of managing and processing large volume data sets. This year’s event will also explore how the advent of platform as a service, such as Cloud Foundry, can help the over three million users of Spring-related technologies deploy and scale applications.

Beyond technical sessions covering the latest in Spring and Grails-related technologies, SpringOne 2GX 2011 will also feature "Spring: The Next Generation", the first discussion of how the Spring principles of simplicity and openness will be applied to next generation enterprise development challenges, including:

  • Next Generation Clients: support for HTML5 and mobile devices in enterprise applications
  • Next Generation Data: support for the myriad of new data management techniques and technologies, including NewSQL, NoSQL and other “Big Data” technologies.
  • Next Generation Security: addressing the security issues  raised by user-centric, social, multi-device and interconnected services
  • Next Generation Architecture: building polyglot applications in a world of asynchronous services

"Over the past year alone, the enterprise application development landscape has changed significantly – from the proliferation of mobile development to shifts in framework popularity – requiring developers to always be on top of the latest trends and relevant tools in the space," said Tod Nielsen, Co-President, Application Platform, VMware. "We're excited to share the latest developments and innovations in open source frameworks to help empower developers to better build, run, scale and manage the next generation of enterprise applications."

Spring is the world's most popular development framework for enterprise Java applications.  A recent report from Evans Data("Spring Source Usage Study," Evans Data Corporation, September 2011) shows:

  • Spring is the framework of choice among expert Java developers.
  • More than two thirds of Java developers are either using Spring today or plan to do so
  • More than half of Spring users expect to grow or significantly grow their use of Spring.
  • 70% of Spring users indicate at least a 50% productivity gain by using Spring and 73% indicate at least a 50% time reduction to deliver a completed project.
  • Spring users are more cloud ready; heavy Spring adopters are more likely to have already deployed applications to the cloud.
