VMware Certifies vSphere(TM) 5 to Run on Open Compute Project Architecture

VMware Joins Open Compute Project to Deliver Greater Datacenter Efficiency

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2012) - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced that it has joined the Facebook Open Compute Project, with VMware vSphere® 5 now certified to run on open AMD- and Intel-based hardware according to the project's specifications. The Open Compute Project is an initiative created by Facebook to increase technology efficiencies and reduce the environmental impacts of datacenters. The new certifications enable users of Open Compute servers to virtualize production workloads, including business-critical applications, using validated joint solutions.

"VMware is committed to delivering innovative technology that transforms and redefines how businesses function and operate in the cloud era," said Richard A. Brunner, chief platform architect, VMware. "VMware vSphere® 5 is now certified to run on Open Compute AMD- and Intel-based v2.0 server platforms. With VMware vSphere 5 now expanding to cover a wide range of embedded processors, I/O devices and servers, customers are offered a greater choice in IT solutions."

The Open Compute Project, launched by Facebook in 2011, applies open-source software principles to the hardware industry to drive the development of the most efficient computing infrastructures at the lowest possible cost. VMware worked closely with Facebook to certify AMD- and Intel-based server platforms based on the Open Compute Project version 2.0 specifications. These platforms are listed on the VMware Compatibility Guide.
