VMware Extends Commitment to U.S. Public Sector with VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US)

Agencies will be able to lower costs, improve efficiency, and comply with federal mandates through VMware and AWS’s jointly engineered hybrid cloud solution, pending FedRAMP authority to operate

WASHINGTON, June 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) today announced VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US), a forthcoming hybrid cloud service that will enable United States public sector agencies to leverage a common cloud infrastructure on premises and in the public cloud to further increase agility and security. VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US), which is on the path to secure FedRAMP authority to operate, was designed to improve IT efficiency and help lower costs as agencies transition to the cloud by enabling them to deploy and run applications on familiar VMware software-defined data centers on AWS GovCloud (US). Since 1998, VMware has been a provider of technology solutions for government agencies of all sizes, providing federal, state and local public sector organizations with counsel on security best practices and, in recent years, FedRAMP-authorized solutions. VMware cloud infrastructure software is already widely used by all cabinet-level agencies, all military services, the Department of Defense, the Intelligence community and the Judicial and Legislative branches of government. This announcement marks VMware’s ongoing commitment of support to government agencies that have unique security and compliance requirements for adopting hybrid cloud. VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US) will be based on these same technologies, providing government organizations with a fast and seamless onramp to the cloud so that they can enhance services virtually immediately, not only for their constituents, but also their employees.

“Public agencies are driving to comply with federal Cloud First mandates that were reinforced in 2017 as part of the Modernizing Government Technology (MGT) Act, which pushes agencies to pursue digital solutions that offer more agility and efficiency, without compromising security standards,” said Lynn Martin, vice president and general manager, Government, Education and Healthcare, VMware. “Through VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US), agencies will be able to augment existing IT infrastructure capacity, enhance continuity of operations and disaster recovery, and facilitate faster application development and testing operations, without re-architecting for new infrastructure or retraining personnel on net-new technologies, tools, and processes.”

“As government agencies increasingly move workloads to the cloud, the ability to seamlessly integrate VMware software applications with AWS helps simplify the IT modernization journey for our customers,” said Teresa Carlson, vice president, Worldwide Public Sector, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “With a hybrid cloud solution, agencies are able to quickly ramp up and start reaping the many benefits of VMware Cloud on AWS while still adhering to required security and compliance standards.”

Delivered, sold and supported by VMware and its channel partners as an on-demand cloud service, and running on Amazon EC2 dedicated, elastic, bare-metal infrastructure, VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US) will be powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, the unified software-defined data center (SDDC) platform that integrates vSphere, VMware vSAN and VMware NSX virtualization technologies. Some of the other leading benefits of VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US) are expected to include:

  • Inclusion of VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension as part of the service for fast, cost-effective bulk migration of applications with no replatforming, retesting, or change in tooling required
  • Zero downtime live migration of applications through VMware vSphere vMotion
  • Reduced downtime and lower costs through consistent and efficient VMware Cloud infrastructure and operations
  • Direct access to a breadth of AWS services available on AWS GovCloud (US)
  • Uninterrupted operations and service delivery for constituent through disaster recovery and Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) capabilities
  • Rapid time to value with the ability to scale host capacity up or down in a few minutes and spin up an entire VMware SDDC in a couple of hours

“In addition to providing agencies flexible sources of working capital funds to securely modernizing IT systems and create more quality and timely services, the MGT Act includes increasing the use of cloud-based solutions,” says Adelaide O'Brien, research director, IDC Government Insights. “By providing flexibility and bi-directional portability of workloads between data centers and the cloud, VMware will enable government clients to more easily migrate to cloud without format conversions, as well as retain optimizations and integrations, all while transparently extending the enterprise datacenter to the cloud.”
