VMware Named a Leader in 2016 Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - August 10, 2016) - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, today announced that VMware is positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of Gartner, Inc.'s 2016 Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure for the seventh consecutive year. (1)

According to Gartner, "Virtualization (in the form of VMs and containers) is a fundamental enabler to IaaS, and it will be used to establish private cloud services, public cloud services and interoperable hybrid cloud services. Effectively, all IaaS offerings will rely on VMs or container technology."

"Since VMware originally pioneered virtualization for x86 systems, our customers have embraced VMware vSphere® broadly across their infrastructure to deliver IT efficiency and business agility," said Mark Lohmeyer, vice president of products, Cloud Platform Business Unit, VMware. "We believe being positioned as a leader in the Magic Quadrant underscores the value of our innovative offerings to customers around the world today and recognizes our strategic vision for the future. We continue to extend VMware vSphere to provide our customers with a common platform for running all of their applications -- traditional and cloud-native -- across both private and public clouds."

VMware vSphere: Common Platform for Cloud-Native and Traditional Applications
VMware vSphere provides customers with a highly available, resilient, on-demand cloud infrastructure to run, protect and manage traditional business critical and cloud-native applications. VMware vSphere, the underlying platform of VMware vSphere with Operations Management™ and VMware vCloud Suite®, is used widely by small and midsize businesses (SMBs), enterprises, hybrid and public cloud service providers, and as a foundation for the desktop virtualization market.

Over the last year, VMware has extended vSphere to support OpenStack and cloud-native technologies to improve the developer experience for building applications using open APIs and container technology while addressing enterprise IT requirements. The company is introducing support for containers across compute, networking, storage and management to help customers deploy containerized applications in production. VMware's expanded offerings include:

  • VMware vSphere Integrated Containers™ - provides IT teams an easy on-ramp to containers while leveraging their existing investments in VMware infrastructure, people, processes and management tools.
  • VMware Integrated OpenStack - an OpenStack distribution that enables organizations to quickly and cost-effectively provide developers with open APIs to access VMware's enterprise-class infrastructure. VMware packages, tests and supports all components of the distribution, including the open source OpenStack code, and provides the distribution free of charge to new and existing vSphere Enterprise Plus Edition™, vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus Edition™ and vCloud Suite customers.
  • VMware Photon Platform - a new cloud-native infrastructure solution optimized for containers and modern applications that is purpose-built for use in API-driven, multi-tenant and high-scale environments. Today, the platform consists of VMware Photon Controller, an open sourced distributed control plane, Photon OS, a minimal Linux container host, and VMware ESXi™. Pivotal and VMware have delivered a cloud-native stack featuring Pivotal Cloud Foundry and VMware Photon Platform to help enterprises run, operate and deploy cloud-native applications.
