"VMware has evolved well beyond simply a server virtualization company, and can deliver the complete Digital Clinical Workspace and unified hybrid cloud to help drive healthcare's digital transformation," said Frank Nydam, Healthcare CTO at VMware. "We believe in improving the quality of patient care through better application access, availability and security. The Digital Clinical Workspace enables caregivers to focus on patients through secure and simple access to patient information from the right device for the right task at the right time. Through the unified hybrid cloud, health IT organizations gain access to a more secure and agile infrastructure to quickly add new applications and services, seamlessly manage IT systems through mergers and acquisitions, and reduce risk from unpredictable outages or scheduled downtime."

Delivering the Digital Clinical Workspace
VMware Workspace ONE unifies user, desktop and mobile management to enable a Digital Clinical Workspace that moves with care providers throughout their day. Workspace ONE delivers fast secure and highly available provider access to all applications and patient data from a single catalog across multiple devices. The Digital Clinical Workspace builds on VMware AlwaysOn Point of Care™, a reference architecture used by healthcare organizations globally. Designed specifically for healthcare applications, and tested with an ecosystem of healthcare and infrastructure partners, VMware AlwaysOn Point of Care mobilizes healthcare providers. It provides a unified access experience that enables providers to quickly and seamlessly access patient information with just the tap of a badge or hands free Bluetooth for simplified clinical workflows, faster decision making and ultimately better patient outcomes.

Enhancing the Digital Patient Experience
From hospital rounds, to community home visits to emergency calls to a doctor at home, healthcare professionals need access to real-time patient information and medical data from anywhere, at any time. VMware Workspace ONE extends the use of mobile devices to patients to improve patient engagement and satisfaction. By providing a single unified platform for user and mobile device management healthcare organizations have the flexibility and control to utilize mobile devices as welcome kiosks and signage and also provision hospital-owned devices for patients to use during their stay or in their own home delivering educational and entertainment content and ongoing medical monitoring.

Driving Adoption of the Healthcare Hybrid Cloud
Healthcare's historic and global transformation doesn't require massive new changes to infrastructure. The unified hybrid cloud, built on a software-defined data center architecture, gives hospitals the flexibility to add new capabilities while leveraging legacy systems as needed. VMware NSX is the networking foundation for the software-defined data center. By bringing the operational model of a virtual machine to the data center network, health IT organizations can transform the economics of health IT network and security operations. VMware NSX enables security built into the infrastructure, the ability to add new apps and services in minutes, not months and enables more effective and efficient approaches to always-on availability and disaster recovery.

Supporting Regulatory Requirements for E-Prescribing of Schedule II Drugs
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has responded to the growing national prescription drug abuse epidemic by finalizing a rule requiring electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) to reduce the potential for controlled substances to get into the wrong hands. To effectively manage the e-prescribing process, organizations must extend applications to clinicians and patients, secure patient information and ensure critical information is always available. VMware enables this through its desktop and network virtualization platforms as well as its mobility software. VMware's NSX micro-segmentation capabilities build a "zero trust" approach to sharing and storing the critical data that informs the process. VMware and partner Imprivata will demo their unified secure platform for EPCS that enables anytime, anywhere secure access to prescription information from any device.

VMware Healthcare Customers Share Transformation Stories
Throughout the show, attendees will learn from VMware customers as they share their stories of how they are using VMware health IT solutions as part of their digital transformation.

  • OhioHealth - James Sturiano of OhioHealth will present "Using Mobile Apps to Create Active Patient Engagement" on March 1, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sands Expo Convention Center, Lando 4201. In this session, attendees will discover how OhioHealth has implemented several apps creating new and better opportunities for patient engagement, simplifying medical workflow, while adhering to regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Baystate Health - Mike Feld of Baystate Health (watch video) will discuss how that organization saved nearly $7M while transforming into a modern healthcare center of tomorrow using VMware NSX network virtualization and VMware Virtual SAN™-based hyperconverged infrastructure. The company's unique three site Active-Active-Active virtual data center infrastructure is the model of always-on connectivity and disaster recovery planning.
  • Parkland Health & Hospital System - As part of a new 2.81 sq. ft. hospital, Parkland CIO Matthew Kull sought to update inefficient desktop infrastructure that provided an inconsistent user experience. Using VMware Horizon® virtual desktop infrastructure, the hospital was successful in cost-effectively delivering a unified end user experience across the enterprise while improving protection for patient data.

VMware Health IT Solutions Recognized with Two Industry Awards
VMware was named the co-winner in the Clinician Workflow Optimization category of the Healthcare Informatics 2016 Leading Edge Awards Program. VMware was also recognized by peer60 with a "Top Mindshare" award for data security -- the fastest growing segment in healthcare -- in conjunction with the release of their latest Big Mega HIT Purchasing Report, focused on what technologies hospitals will be buying this year, which vendors they will be buying them from, and which vendors are winning most of the new business.

"It has been my privilege and pleasure to oversee our second annual Leading Edge Awards program, which for the second time represents healthcare IT vendor companies whose innovations are supporting improvements in healthcare delivery, operations, and cost savings across U.S. healthcare," said Mark Hagland, Editor-in-Chief, Healthcare Informatics.
