- New VMware Workstation REST API Enables Developers to Integrate with Third-Party Tools and Automate Development, Design and Testing Tasks
- VMware Fusion Platform Enhancements Include New Developer-Oriented Controls and User Interface Improvements
PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 25, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a leading innovator in enterprise software, today unveiled the newest versions of its VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion solutions. Upgrades include availability of and improvements to REST APIs that allow developers to integrate Workstation 15 Pro and Fusion 11 Pro with modern development tools to automate development, design and testing tasks. In addition, both virtualization platforms feature new user interface improvements, expanded OS and hardware support, and an improved remote VMware vSphere view.
“With 20 years of virtualization excellence and more than 500,000 customers using our Workstation and Fusion platforms, we are constantly evolving these solutions and adding capabilities to serve our broad user base,” said Krish Prasad, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Platform Business Unit, VMware. “The latest enhancements to Workstation 15 and Fusion 11, including delivering REST APIs to automate tasks, provide IT pros, developers and businesses alike with a seamless way to deliver, better protect and manage Windows, Linux and Mac desktops and applications on premises or in the cloud.”
Workstation 15 Pro and Workstation 15 Player
With this release, VMware is introducing a REST API to enable developers to remotely and programmatically manage virtual machines (VM) running on VMware Workstation Pro and integrate with other automation tools in a continuous development and testing pipeline. In addition to integrating with third-party solutions, the new REST API enables developers and quality assurance teams to build custom in-house desktop request workflows to automate Workstation VM deployment. An API Explorer provides a browser-based utility with complete documentation, and the API is also hosted on code.vmware.com, which developers can access to learn how to best leverage the API for their application.
In addition to providing updated OS support – including support for Ubuntu 18.04.1, Windows October 2018 Updates and others – VMware Workstation 15 Pro and VMware Workstation 15 Player feature several user interface updates. For example, the new release offers an improved user interface experience on 4K and HiDPI displays. With over 500 new feature icons as well as updated product icons, the Workstation family has never looked so good. Additionally, VMware Workstation 15 products now support a new DirectX 10.1 virtual graphics engine with Anti-Aliasing, and Shader support.
Finally, VMware Workstation 15 Pro includes an improved remote vSphere view in which IT admins can access a more accurate description of the host topology. When connected to remote vSphere environments, Workstation can now see all clusters and datacenters, in addition to an inventory of all VMs.
Fusion 11 Pro and Fusion 11
Last year with Fusion 10 Pro, VMware released a REST API to enable developers to integrate VMware Fusion Pro with modern development tools like Docker, Vagrant, Kubernetes and others. This year, VMware is improving the Fusion Pro API to include additional developer features. For example, developers can leverage new networking-oriented controls to programmatically assign and change virtual networks, organize MAC to IP Address binding and specify NAT port forwarding rules on the fly.
VMware Fusion 11 delivers a new Application Menu to help users quickly access VM inventory; change view modes, settings and snapshots; or launch Windows applications with a single click. The Application Menu can run with or without Fusion, allowing users to launch and control VMs in an instant.
VMware Fusion solutions include expanded hardware and OS support, including support for the new 18-core iMac Pro and macOS 10.14 Mojave, among others. The new version also includes several user interface improvements including a customizable touch bar for MacBook users, updated icons, and DirectX 10.1 graphics support.
Finally, VMware Fusion 11 Pro also includes the improved remote vSphere view to provide users with a more complete description of the host topology, including visibility into the remote environment’s host, cluster and datacenter organization structure.
