First German Carrier to Debut VoLTE Service Leverages vCloud for NFV Platform to Accelerate Service Innovation and Time to Market
PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - May 05, 2015) - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the VMware vCloud® for NFV platform has been deployed by Vodafone Germany to support Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services over Germany's most modern wireless network.
The VoLTE service in Germany is the latest NFV-based service to be launched by Vodafone on the VMware platform. Using Vodafone's own internal blueprint, the vCloud for NFV platform is successfully supporting Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) from multiple network application vendors that combine to create the end-to-end VoLTE service. The service allows Vodafone to offer customers crystal-clear voice, lower call setup time and consumes lower energy on smartphones. According to Vodafone, the service covers more than 70 percent of Germany's service area.
"Vodafone is continuously improving its state-of-the-art infrastructure to optimize the customer experience, which is why it is the first German carrier to roll out Voice over LTE," said Rui Frazao, Director Network Engineering, Vodafone Germany. "By making the decision to own and manage our own platform and deploying VMware virtualization technology as the basis of our NFV infrastructure. Vodafone has been able to combine the best Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) from different vendors on a single platform, and to bring high-value services to market more quickly."
VMware vCloud for NFV is an integrated platform that combines VMware's production-proven virtualized compute, networking, storage and management solutions with integrated OpenStack support. With support for more than 40 different virtual network functions (VNFs) from more than 30 vendors, VMware vCloud for NFV is a leading platform available today that runs different VNFs from different vendors side by side on the same unified platform for the Telco cloud.
"With vCloud for NFV, forward thinking organizations such as Vodafone Germany can leverage VMware's industry-leading cloud infrastructure for faster time to market of new and differentiated services while driving sustainable cost reductions through a cloud operations model," said Shekar Ayyar, corporate senior vice president and general manager, Telco NFV group at VMware. "VMware is privileged to work with Vodafone Germany to help them build their cloud DNA as they transform themselves into a next-generation communications service provider."
