VMware View(R) Enables Texserve to Reduce Technology Costs in Schools Across the State of Texas

School Districts Use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to Extend Existing Desktops While Maintaining Rich E-Learning for Students and Faculty

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 27, 2012) -  VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced continued momentum for desktop virtualization with Texserve, a technology provider for school districts and government agencies across the state of Texas deploying 10,000 virtual desktops using VMware View® for students, teachers and professional staff across 1,800 public and private school districts within Texas.

"Transforming legacy Windows desktops and applications into a managed service using VMware View® makes managing tens of thousands of desktops simple and easy," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, End-User Computing, VMware. "As organizations come to realize the benefits of VDI and adoption increases, VMware View is being used in some of the largest deployments in the industry. We are proud to be supporting public education in their efforts to deliver high-quality education through the use of innovative technologies."

Educational institutions are facing many challenges with state budget cuts and limited resources, requiring them to do more with less. Schools across Texas wanted to maximize the use of their existing equipment and future investments in hardware to provide students and staff access to learning applications through onsite equipment or personal laptops and mobile devices. Without the resources for a full technology upgrade, Texserve determined VMware View was the best solution on the market to deliver virtual desktops to help simplify technology, increase manageability and connect students and teachers more efficiently to digital content in the post-PC era.

"We needed to reduce overall desktop management costs without compromising the quality of education, and we saw virtualized desktops and applications as the way forward," said Leatha Mullins, CTO, Texserve. "VMware View® offered an affordable and efficient way to use existing IT assets to enable students and faculty anytime, anywhere access to learning applications without over-burdening the limited number of technical staff in each school district. Scalable management made deploying the product easy and end users still enjoyed a rich experience."

Approximately 4.9 million students, 320,000 teachers and an additional 70,000 professional staff will have access to virtualized desktops with VMware View. Users will gain access to enhanced learning resources and digital content using onsite school equipment or remotely via the Internet. Additionally, VMware View will enable IT administrators greater control and security when students bring their personal laptops or connected devices to school to access content.
