VMware Introduces Virtual SMP, a Breakthrough Technology Marking the Next Evolution of Virtual Machine Software

Customers Can Now Deploy Their Most Resource-Intensive Enterprise Applications in Virtual Machines

PALO ALTO, Calif., February 18, 2003-- VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual machine software for industry-standard systems, today announced VMware Virtual SMP (symmetric multiprocessing). Currently, one or more virtual machines can run on a single processor. Now with VMware Virtual SMP, it is possible for a single virtual machine to span multiple processors, making virtual machines ideal for the most resource-intensive enterprise applications including databases, ERP applications and email servers.

"VMware Virtual SMP really completes the original vision we had to provide full virtual machine support for all modern Intel IA32 laptops, desktops and servers," said Diane Greene, president and CEO of VMware. "We introduced VMware Workstation in 1999 and now, four years later, we are able to expand our server line to include full virtualized SMP support."

With the introduction of Virtual SMP, VMware raises the bar for scalability and throughput in a virtual machine. Virtual SMP increases performance, enhances utilization and consolidates SMP applications on fewer, more powerful servers. Virtual SMP dramatically increases available computing power and allows multiple processors to work in parallel on a single guest operating system image.

Availability

VMware Virtual SMP is currently in testing with select customers. Virtual SMP is an add-on product for VMware ESX Server, enterprise-class virtual machine software for consolidating and partitioning servers in high-performance environments. Virtual SMP is expected to be available in Summer, 2003.
