Growing up as a science student, I always imagined my future in medicine. Like many students who are passionate about biology and helping people, becoming a doctor felt like the natural path for me. I spent years believing that hospitals, stethoscopes, and patient care would define my career.
But life has an interesting way of redirecting us toward opportunities we never expected.
Discovering a New Kind of Problem-Solving
While my dream started in science, I slowly became interested in technology as well. During my studies, I started using computers and software and saw how technology could help solve problems and make life easier for people. I also realized that technology plays an important role in science. This interest gradually grew and eventually led me to a rewarding career in IT.
What began as curiosity soon became a passion. I realized technology was not just about computers or coding. It was about solving problems, creating impact, and continuously learning. That realization changed the direction of my career completely.
I decided to step into IT and pursued my Master’s in Information Technology in India. It was a major shift from my original career dream, but it felt right. During my studies, I developed confidence in technical problem-solving, systems thinking, and customer-focused support. I also began to understand how technology connects industries, people, and businesses.
Building the Bridge Between Technology and Business
I went on to move to Australia–opening another important chapter in my life. I completed my Master of Business Administration at the University of Technology Sydney, where I learned that technical skills alone are not enough in today’s world.
Leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and business understanding are equally important. That combination of IT and management became something I strongly believed in, and still do today.
After completing my studies, I worked as a Technical Support Engineer. This role taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of delivering solutions under pressure. Every issue solved was a learning experience. Every customer interaction strengthened my communication and analytical skills.
Like many professionals, I also faced uncertainty after finishing a contract role and searching for the next opportunity. But sometimes, the most unexpected opportunities become the most meaningful ones.
Finding My Way to Mainframe
My next turning point came through the Broadcom Vitality Program.
Mainframes have always fascinated me. To me, they represented something massive, complex, and almost untouchable: The backbone of critical industries and enterprise systems around the world. I thought of mainframes as giant machines powering banks, governments, and large organizations behind the scenes.
The idea of working with them always felt like a distant dream, and the Broadcom Vitality Program changed that completely. Instead of seeing mainframes as intimidating systems, I began to understand them as powerful, reliable, and incredibly important technologies that continue to drive modern enterprises.
The program helped me build foundational technical skills, understand enterprise environments, and gain confidence in an area I once thought was beyond my reach. More importantly, it showed me that career growth is not always linear. As my career expanded, my dreams evolved.
Different Path, Same Purpose
I may not have become a doctor, but in many ways, technology gave me another way to solve problems and support people, just in a different environment.
From science classrooms to IT support, from studying technology to understanding business leadership, and now stepping into the world of mainframes, every phase of my journey has shaped who I am today.
Today, I look at mainframes not with a sense of intimidation, but uncontrollable excitement.
They represent stability, innovation, and endless learning opportunities. As I continue building my future in this field, I’m grateful for every unexpected turn that brought me here.
What This Journey Taught Me
If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s this: You do not need to follow the path you originally planned to build a meaningful career. Sometimes the best opportunities come from being open to change, trusting your skills, and having the courage to step into something unfamiliar.
