The Broadcom IT services team serves 30 different internal organizations. There are 26 business units and four different functions. Each has hundreds of distinct workloads with diverse characteristics. The team wanted to build a consumption-ready, highly available cloud platform, called Enterprise Private Cloud (EPC), accessible to all employees using VMware Cloud Foundation. Because of the extensive product knowledge and expertise in global execution, VMware Professional Services was the obvious choice for implementing the solution.
Accelerating the deployment of Enterprise Private Cloud
VMware Professional Services collaborated closely with the Broadcom IT services team, working in sprints to assess the requirements and infrastructure. During the initial discussions, VMware Professional Services started illustrating the capabilities within VMware Cloud Foundation and counseled the Broadcom IT team on preparing the environment for what the implementation would look like.
Within three months of defining and implementing the solution, VMware Professional Services deployed the first instance with 300 hosts available for testing.
In addition, VMware Professional Services guided Broadcom IT in using the product and managing the platform. Extensive knowledge transfer sessions were provided to the IT team to understand how to manage the environment. At the heart of the VMware Professional Services approach is empowering IT. Once a solution is deployed, a key question is whether IT knows how to use and consume the product.
The first phase of the transformation focuses on fast self-service, provisioning VMs in minutes and setting up a lab-as-a-service environment for testing, security, and stack-wide governance. Enterprise Private Cloud is built on a foundational pillar, like a hyperscaler, and is scalable and highly available.
Delivering seamless user experiences and reducing consumption times
The Broadcom data center transformation journey has been tremendously successful, providing seamless user experiences and reducing consumption times. VMware Professional Services architects were a critical resource in building and executing the solution. A services catalog was created for Broadcom developers as well as executive dashboards for utilization reporting. Across the organization, employees now have access to enhanced tools and resources to perform their roles more effectively.
Broadcom IT and VMware Professional Services are on track to have a resilient, redundant, no-fail infrastructure. As part of the transformation, Broadcom will consolidate 41 data centers into seven using VMware Cloud Foundation as the underlying technology. Building the Enterprise Private Cloud has helped the company reduce its underlying infrastructure by 60 percent.
