Schuberg Philis Delivers Mission-Critical IT with Private Cloud Built on VMware Cloud Foundation

Schuberg Philis, a long-standing player in the mission-critical IT sector, has been supporting vital industries such as finance, healthcare and energy for over two decades. The company prides itself on modernizing technology not just for the sake of updating systems and processes, but to achieve concrete business goals.

“Schuberg Philis takes care of the mission-critical application workloads of our customers—their digital crown jewels. Our role is to take away their headaches and solve their big problems. We’re committed to 100% functional uptime and 100% customer satisfaction,” says Onno van den Berg, mission critical engineer, Schuberg Philis. “Some of our customers provide banking and pension services or are government organizations providing public services. These are society-critical, and we take that responsibility seriously.”

Staying ahead of the technology curve

In order to fulfil this commitment, Schuberg Philis must not only anticipate the evolving needs of its clients but also possess the technical expertise to deliver innovative solutions that meet future needs. When Schuberg Philis saw consumption trends evolving, it knew it needed to act.

“We were getting lots of requests for databases as a service and Kubernetes as a service, as well as requests for our IT services consumption model to be easier. We took the opportunity to really listen to our internal customers and to use it as an opportunity to transform what we were doing,” says van den Berg.

Schuberg Philis had been using cloud computing infrastructure for more than 10 years.

The company used a combination of Linux and Apache Cloud Stack to build and manage the environment and had modified the software stack to meet its specific requirements. However, the environment lacked enterprise-grade features, functionality and scalability and was unable to meet the new types of requests that van den Berg’s team was receiving.

Integrated platform reduces complexity

The company evaluated different solutions. “VMware Cloud Foundation was a perfect fit because it combines various cloud infrastructure software capabilities from the Broadcom portfolio into one integrated solution. We have a unified platform for managing compute, storage and networking resources,” says van den Berg.

Schuberg Philis now has centralized orchestration across its data centers, ensuring standardized configurations and reducing operational complexity. By consolidating disparate functions into a single, integrated platform, the management burden for van den Berg’s team is significantly reduced. The team is also benefiting from high levels of automation leading to streamlined workflows and reduced manual tasks.

Game-changing cloud capabilities

Importantly, the new private cloud environment enables much faster service delivery. van den Berg’s team have empowered internal customers with self-service consumption of Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure resources “as a Service,” while maintaining control, security and compliance. The IT infrastructure is much more agile and adaptable so the team can rapidly respond to changing business needs and customer demands.

Schuberg Philis has also strengthened its sovereign cloud offering. Some of its European customers have stringent requirements concerning data sovereignty, privacy and other regulatory areas. Schuberg Philis’s private sovereign cloud, built on VMware Cloud Foundation, addresses these needs by localizing and customizing its cloud infrastructure and managed services to enable its customers to adhere to strict data sovereignty laws and requirements.

In essence, Schuberg Philis uses VMware Cloud Foundation as its platform to deliver IT services more efficiently, more secure and more rapidly, ultimately enhancing internal customer productivity and driving business growth.

“From a technology perspective, we can see Broadcom has a clear vision. VMware Cloud Foundation is enabling us to deliver private cloud capabilities from a single solution. We’re excited about the future of the platform,” says van den Berg.
