I didn’t set out to work in tech, let alone on the mainframe.
Like many students, I entered college with a clear plan. I was pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, imagining a future designing machines and solving physical problems. Then, during my sophomore spring semester, everything changed.
I took a class called MATLAB: Computer Software for Mechanical Engineering. At first, it was frustrating. The concepts didn’t come easily, and coding felt foreign. But one day, something clicked and I began to understand. I realized I didn’t only understand the material, but I also enjoyed it. That moment sparked a curiosity that would completely redirect my career.
Falling in Love with Code
From 2017 to 2022, I immersed myself in computer science, balancing school with a part-time job while steadily building my technical foundation. I learned everything from basic Java to more advanced concepts like data structures, control flow, and object-oriented programming. It was challenging yet deeply rewarding.
In 2022, I landed my first programming role as a Full Stack Developer. Java was central to my work, and I quickly expanded my skill set to include JavaScript and Spring Boot. It felt like I had finally arrived in the tech world.
Then, in September, a recruiter introduced me to something I knew almost nothing about: the mainframe.
I was shocked. Not only by how powerful it was, but by how critical it remains to the global economy. This was the backbone of modern business.
Discovering the Mainframe Path
While continuing to build my full-stack experience, I leaned into the fundamentals of the mainframe. I completed every badge I could through the IBM Z Xplore program, gaining hands-on experience with JCL, REXX, and COBOL. Each step deepened my interest and confirmed that I was onto something meaningful.
In May 2023, I took my next role as a junior computer professional, expanding my exposure to mainframe environments. Still, I felt drawn to something more—specifically, the systems programmer and developer side of the platform.
That’s when I discovered Broadcom’s Mainframe Vitality Program, through LaunchCode, in the fall of 2023.
Building Confidence Through the Vitality Program
The program gave me exactly what I was looking for: structure, depth, and real-world experience. I learned the essentials such as TSO, ISPF, security protocols, and system troubleshooting and gained clarity on where I wanted to specialize.
I chose OPS/MVS administration, a path that aligned perfectly with the principles I had already been exploring. By the end of the training, I felt both prepared and confident.
From Residency to Real-World Impact
Next came my residency with a financial services client. I knew my role, but the nerves were real. Would I know enough? Could I keep up?
Those doubts didn’t last long.
The team welcomed me, mentored me, and, most importantly, trusted me with meaningful work. Every challenge, even the missteps, became a learning opportunity that accelerated my growth far more than I expected.
Just Getting Started
As I wrap up my residency and transition into a full-time role with my host company, I’m incredibly grateful for this journey. The Mainframe Vitality Program gave me the tools, confidence, and direction to build a long, sustainable career in an industry that truly matters.
