From an early age, I understood the value of discipline, accountability, and showing up ready to work. At 17, I enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Intelligence Analyst–which shaped my work ethic and gave me a strong foundation that still guides me today. The structure and expectations of military service instilled habits that carried well beyond my time in uniform, especially as I began thinking seriously about my long-term future.
My interest in software started even earlier, dating back to high school when I taught myself to code and build small programs simply to see what I could create. That curiosity never faded. While serving, I pursued a software engineering degree at Penn State, motivated by a clear goal: to build a stable, secure career in technology where I could apply both analytical thinking and practical problem-solving.
Adapting to Face New Challenges
My senior year coincided with the height of COVID, and like many others, I faced unexpected challenges. After my car was totaled in an accident, transportation became limited. To maintain financial stability, I took a security job within walking distance of my apartment. At the same time, I continued investing in my future by completing LaunchCode’s DevSecOps bootcamp for transitioning soldiers and veterans.
To say this period of my life was easy would be a misnomer, but it reinforced the importance of adaptability and persistence. After completing the LaunchCode bootcamp, I was introduced to the Vitality Program as an option to continue building a technical career. The opportunity immediately stood out as a way to deepen my skills through hands-on experience and additional mentorship, and I applied without hesitation.
When I was accepted into the Broadcom Mainframe Vitality Program, the opportunity became even more meaningful. With paid training and a clear path into enterprise technology, the program allowed me to leave my security role and fully dedicate myself to learning. The schedule was demanding, but that intensity helped keep my priorities clear and my goals in focus.
Finding a Meaningful Career
I was initially placed in the IDMS track, which aligned well with my interest in structured database systems and data integrity. Near the end of the program, a Datacom role opened at a large domestic bank. Recognizing the opportunity, I moved quickly to complete the additional Datacom training. With support from the Vitality management team (especially Donna Amaral) the placement came together smoothly, and I joined the bank full-time shortly thereafter.
From day one, I was working in live Datacom environments. My responsibilities included performance tuning, query optimization, and database administration. I genuinely enjoy the demands of precision, accountability, and attention to detail. Supporting critical financial systems is a serious responsibility, and knowing that my work directly contributes to the bank’s reliability makes the role especially rewarding.
Looking back, the impact of the Vitality program is clear. Broadcom delivered the technical foundation needed to succeed, the management team made the transition possible, and the Datacom community continues to support the growth of new talent. Today, I hold a position rooted in real expertise and meaningful contribution, which to me is far beyond an ordinary job. It’s a role that reflects both where I started, those who assisted along the way, and the disciplined, deliberate path that brought me here.
