VMware ESX Server: The central building block in Fujitsu Siemens Computers' strategy for IT Infrastructure Consolidation with PRIMERGY servers

Munich, Germany -- December 11, 2002-- Fujitsu Siemens Computers today announced an agreement with VMware in which it will resell VMware ESX Server, virtual machine software for consolidating and partitioning industry-standard servers, as the main system platform for IT Infrastructure Consolidation on its industry-standard PRIMERGY servers. Under the agreement, Fujitsu Siemens Computers will support VMware ESX Server as a standard system software product.

VMware has worked with Fujitsu Siemens Computers to support the ServerView server management software in the recently released version of ESX Server software. In addition, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has become a member of the VMware Preferred Hardware Partner Program. As a member, VMware will certify the Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMERGY T-850 server to ensure compatibility fouse with VMware software. Testing and certification has been completed for specific T-850 server consolidation configuration including SAN storage subsystems connected via FibreChannel.

IT Infrastructure Consolidation with virtual machines increases effective utilization of the overall resources of a system. Applications and infrastructure services currently running on dedicated servers can be consolidated on fewer, highly scalable, highly reliable enterprise-class servers, such as the PRIMERGY T850. Multiple configurations based on different operating systems can co-exist on one dedicated hardware infrastructure. Server utilization is improved, which boosts Return On Investment (ROI). VMware ESX Server brings the following benefits:

  • Optimum utilization of server resources
  • Lower maintenance costs and downtime
  • Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across the server infrastructure
  • Faster ROI

Besides efficiency, VMware ESX Server also provides additional, valuable features that significantly help in tasks such as:

  • Software development and testing
  • Improving the software lifecycle management of legacy applications
  • Smooth migration of legacy applications

IT Infrastructure Consolidation - a central strategy for Fujitsu Siemens Computers

Following an increasing number of requests from customers, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has agreed on a central, cross-platform strategy for "IT Infrastructure Consolidation," which is clearly focused on Business Critical Computing. The objective is to replace the large inherited base of individual servers built up over the years by fewer but more powerful servers. The strategy aims to ensure that different architectures interwork as efficiently as possible, in order to bring about the maximum benefit for users. In the industry-standard server sector, the PRIMERGY T850 is the key product foconsolidation.

Pairing the PRIMERGY T850 server with VMware ESX Server gives customers a way to run a wide variety of applications in virtual machines running their own operating systems. This allows different virtual machines to share resources selectively. Resources can also be assigned to individual virtual machines on a dedicated, exclusive basis, thereby making maximum use of all the resources a server has available.
