Informatica Deploys VMware Software

VMware Used for Multi-Platform Development

Palo Alto, Calif., February 24, 2000-- VMware, Inc., the company that is changing the one operating system, one machine computing model, today announced that Informatica (Nasdaq: INFA), a leading provider of analytic solutions for e-business, has deployed VMware software to support multi-platform application development.

Informatica is a leader in the exploding business intelligence and analytic applications markets. Informatica's customers use theiproducts to provide business intelligence throughout the enterprise. As such, Informatica needs to support multiple operating systems.

VMware's virtual machine technology is redefining the way people think about computing by transforming the boundaries of the traditional one OS, one machine model. VMware's desktop software enables a single computer to run multiple applications and operating systems concurrently without having to reboot or partition the hard drive. A graphical user interface allows users to toggle between operating systems with a single keystroke, and the software supports full networking and multimedia for each virtual machine. The software also has a powerful undoable disk feature, and allows users to suspend and resume virtual machines in the same way they would a laptop.

Informatica software engineer Alec Chattaway uses VMware to develop on Linux. Running VMware on top of his Microsoft Windows system, Chattaway is able to run Linux in a window on his Windows NT machine. Thus, he is able to work with Windows NT and Linux development environments simultaneously on a single computer.

According to Chattaway, "I don't need two machines under my desk to develop for both platforms anymore. Using VMware's software, I can share files between virtual machines by networking them, allowing the virtual machines to function in almost exactly the same way as wholly separate physical computers would. VMware is a true solution for multi-platform development, since it actually allows multiple OS environments running natively to coexist on a single machine."

What this ultimately means for Informatica is faster development, increased flexibility, and increased productivity from its engineers. Ivan Chong, Director of Product Management foInformatica, summarizes how VMware has benefited Informatica: "VMware gives us maximum flexibility to respond to the needs of E-businesses quickly and effectively. In addition, since it leverages existing hardware, VMware allows us to develop for new platforms while expending far fewer resources than would otherwise be necessary. VMware gets us there much faster."

According to Dave Michaud, VMware Vice President of Marketing, "We're excited that Informatica is using VMware to increase productivity and lower costs while developing for multiple platforms. VMware virtual machine technology will change the way people think about and use operating systems and applications, opening the door to incredibly flexible, powerful computing environments."
