VMware Memory Resource Management Paper Wins OSDI Best Paper Award
PALO ALTO, Calif., December 30, 2002— VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for industry-standard computers, today announced that Carl Waldspurger, senior member of the VMware technical staff, has received the Operating Systems Design and Implementation (OSDI) Best Paper award for his paper on "Memory Resource Management in VMware ESX Server". The paper introduces and examines the core mechanisms and policies used to manage memory resources in VMware ESX Server, a thin software layer designed to multiplex hardware resources efficiently among virtual machines running unmodified operating systems.
Waldspurger received the OSDI Best Paper award at the Fifth OSDI Symposium that was sponsored by USENIX and co-sponsored by ACM SIGOPS, all in cooperation with IEEE TCOS. Waldspurger received the highly prestigious ACM Doctoral Dissertation award in 1995. In 1994, Waldspurger received the Best Paper award at the First OSDI Symposium for his paper entitled "Lottery Scheduling: Flexible Proportional-Share Resource Management".
