This video demonstration shows you how VMware Dynamic Multipath Optimization™ (DMPO) improves the delivery of real-time applications such as voice and video. The demo shows a client device behind a traditional network with a router at the edge. The client host accesses a remote video application. On the other side of the screen, you will see a similar setup that adds DMPO with VMware SD-WAN™. Which configuration performs better under poor network conditions? (We will give away the ending: it’s VMware SD-WAN with DMPO.)

More about DMPO
VMware SD-WAN, part of VMware SASE™, enables enterprises and service providers to use multiple WAN transports simultaneously, maximize bandwidth, and ensure application performance. The unique cloud-delivered architecture offers these benefits for on-premises and cloud use cases such as SaaS and IaaS. This requires building an overlay network with multiple tunnels and monitoring and adapting to the change in the underlying WAN transports in real time. To deliver a resilient overlay network that considers real-time WAN link performance, VMware developed the DMPO protocol.
DMPO is used between the VMware SD-WAN components that process and forward data traffic: the VMware SD-WAN Edge and the VMware SD-WAN Gateway.
VMware SD-WAN Gateways is a cloud service that works with local Edges to automatically aggregate multiple WAN circuits and intelligently optimize user traffic performance through DMPO. In conjunction with other features of SD-WAN, enterprises benefit from VMware DMPO features such as continuous monitoring, dynamic application steering, on-demand remediation, and application-aware overlay Quality of Service (QoS).
VMware SD-WAN Gateways optimize SaaS applications and real-time traffic because they can protect a branch’s last-mile connectivity and aggregate the capacity of WAN circuits. Gateways enhance cloud connectivity and improve real-world user experience. The cloud VMware SD-WAN Gateways offer consistent performance with on-ramp to the cloud and enable SD-WAN branches to apply DMPO to remediate WAN degradations for real-time and TCP-based applications.
VMware SD-WAN mitigates WAN challenges today with unique application-aware DMPO technologies and a globally distributed set of cloud Gateways to ensure consistent performance and an outstanding user experience for business-critical applications such as Microsoft 365 and public cloud services. The unique ability of DMPO to protect a branch’s last mile connectivity and the solution’s advanced cloud infrastructure enables organizations to gain simple-to-deploy, secure, and high-performing WAN connectivity from branches to the cloud.
White paper available
To learn more about VMware DMPO and VMware SD-WAN architecture, check out the paper VMware SD-WAN Cloud Gateway Advantages. This technical white paper steps through real-time tests of application transit through cloud VMware SD-WAN Gateways, using synthetic traffic. The results show how DMPO and other features provide these benefits:
- VMware SD-WAN provides consistent performance for SaaS applications and file downloads by utilizing multiple WAN links simultaneously for traffic forwarded to the SD-WAN fabric.
- In the event of network packet loss and other WAN degradations, the VMware SD-WAN Edge can use remediation techniques to overcome the loss and jitter – even with a single link.
- With more than one WAN link, the VMware SD-WAN Edge can increase download times by up to 40 percent.
